Self-ligating braces use advanced brackets that eliminate the need for the wires and elastic bands required by traditional braces. Chad Watts, DMD, at Montclair Orthodontics, specializes in comprehensive orthodontic care and offers options like self-ligating braces. If you’re interested in self-ligating braces and live in or around Piedmont, Berkeley, Lamorinda, Emeryville, or the East Bay, call the office or request a consultation online today.
All types of braces move your teeth by applying consistent pressure. The pressure moves the tooth. As the tooth moves, some of the jawbone is reabsorbed to make way for the movement, while new bone grows in the space where the tooth used to be.
Metal braces have a bracket (a metal piece attached to each tooth) that holds an archwire. The archwire runs through each bracket, connecting them and guiding tooth movement.
Here’s the difference between traditional and self-ligating braces:
Self-ligating braces offer the following advantages over traditional braces:
Dr. Watts uses Damon Braces®, advanced self-ligating braces that offer a choice between clear and metal brackets.
The process for getting self-ligating braces is the same as traditional braces. Dr. Watts begins with a consultation to evaluate the problem.
After examining your teeth, bite, and jaw, he takes digital X-rays to see the location of tooth roots and ensure the bone and periodontal ligaments are healthy. If you have dental problems, such as cavities or gum disease, Dr. Watts will address these issues before applying braces.
When you’re ready for braces, Dr. Watts uses your digital X-rays, considers your facial structure, and listens to your preferences to plan your treatment. The movement of each tooth is carefully mapped to ensure your plan produces the desired results.
Finally, Dr. Watts uses a special adhesive to attach the brackets and inserts and adjusts the archwire.
