Self-Ligating Braces

If you’re interested in self-ligating braces and live in or around Piedmont, Berkeley, Lamorinda, Emeryville, or the East Bay, call the office or request a consultation online today.

Self-Ligating Braces Q & A

What are self-ligating braces?

All types of braces move your teeth by applying consistent pressure. The pressure moves the tooth. As the tooth moves, some of the jawbone is reabsorbed to make way for the movement, while new bone grows in the space where the tooth used to be.

Metal braces have a bracket (a metal piece attached to each tooth) that holds an archwire. The archwire runs through each bracket, connecting them and guiding tooth movement.

Here’s the difference between traditional and self-ligating braces:

  • Traditional braces apply pressure through metal ties and elastic bands that attach the archwire to the bracket.
  • Self-ligating braces feature advanced brackets with a built-in clip or sliding mechanism that applies pressure to the archwire. As a result, there are no visible bands.

What benefits can I expect from self-ligating braces?

Self-ligating braces offer the following advantages over traditional braces:

  • Shorter office visits: The self-ligating brackets are easier and faster to adjust than elastic bands.
  • Faster treatment: Your orthodontic treatment may take less time because self-ligating braces use shape-memory wire, which applies a more consistent pressure and predictable movement.
  • Fewer appointments: Since self-ligating braces apply more reliable pressure and movement, you may need fewer adjustment appointments.
  • Easier brushing and cleaning: It’s easier to keep self-ligating braces clean because they have fewer pieces that can trap food.
  • Less discomfort: All braces cause some discomfort. However, self-ligating braces apply a gentler pressure, which may cause less irritation and soreness.

Dr. Watts uses Damon Braces®, advanced self-ligating braces that offer a choice between clear and metal brackets.

What should I expect when getting self-ligating braces?

The process for getting self-ligating braces is the same as traditional braces. Dr. Watts begins with a consultation to evaluate the problem.

After examining your teeth, bite, and jaw, he takes digital X-rays to see the location of tooth roots and ensure the bone and periodontal ligaments are healthy. If you have dental problems, such as cavities or gum disease, Dr. Watts will address these issues before applying braces.

When you’re ready for braces, Dr. Watts uses your digital X-rays, considers your facial structure, and listens to your preferences to plan your treatment. The movement of each tooth is carefully mapped to ensure your plan produces the desired results.

Finally, Dr. Watts uses a special adhesive to attach the brackets and inserts and adjusts the archwire.
