Braces Q & A

What are braces?

Braces are typically made up of metal wires and brackets that bond to your teeth, gradually improving their alignment over time to create a beautiful smile. Montclair Orthodontics offers an array of orthodontic treatments based on the severity of the dental concerns you experience, your treatment preferences, and your long-term goals.

What are the benefits of braces?

Braces at Montclair Orthodontics offer the following benefits and more:

  • Straighter teeth
  • Gorgeous smile
  • Functional bite
  • Improved self-confidence
  • Lower risk of future dental problems
  • Easier teeth cleaning

Having a perfect smile can dramatically enhance your overall quality of life.

Am I a candidate for braces?

Dr. Watts completes an initial evaluation to determine if you’re a candidate for braces and which type best matches your needs. He reviews your dental history, discusses your desired results, and takes digital X-rays to create a personalized treatment plan.

Montclair Orthodontics offers child braces, teenager braces, and adult braces, as well as palatal expanders that widen the upper jaw to prepare for braces.

What are the different types of braces?

Montclair Orthodontics provides the following types of braces and other orthodontic treatments:

Mini-diamond braces

Mini-diamond braces are smaller than traditional metal braces and offer optimal comfort. They produce the same results — a gorgeous smile with a perfect bite.

Lingual braces

Lingual braces are like traditional braces, but they bond to the back surface of your teeth rather than the front. Other people won’t realize you’re wearing them.

Traditional metal braces

Traditional braces use wires and metal brackets to slowly shift your teeth into their ideal position. Tiny elastic bands help secure the wires in place throughout treatment.

Clear braces

Montclair Orthodontics also offers Clarity™ clear braces, which provide the same results as traditional metal braces. However, they’re much less noticeable since they are made up of translucent materials.

Invisalign®

Invisalign consists of a series of clear aligners that straighten your teeth without metal wires or brackets. Simply remove the aligners to eat and brush your teeth and switch to the next set of aligners in your treatment series every 1-2 weeks.

Self-ligating braces

Montclair Orthodontics offers Damon braces (self-ligating braces) that are similar to traditional metal braces but use a built-in system to hold the archwire in place, rather than elastic bands.

Headgear

Headgear is helpful when braces alone aren’t enough to shift the teeth into a better position. It’s a device worn partially outside of your mouth, attached to a strap around your head or neck.

Retainers

Wearing a retainer after completing orthodontic treatment ensures your teeth stay in their new alignment without shifting out of place over time. Fixed and removable retainers are available.
